RUM Smartboard

Prev Next

Catchpoint's Web App (RUM) Smartboard is designed to help you quickly identify the cause of performance issues related to your RUM applications. When you receive an alert or see concerning test results in your RUM Dashboards, a good first troubleshooting step is to view the Smartboard for that App, locate the issue in the timeline, and then use the filters and visualization tools to see if you can narrow down the potential causes of the issue.
RUM Smartboard

Let's look closer at each of the sections in the RUM Smartboard.

Source

This is the specific Web App whose data is being rendered in the Smartboard. You can change the source by clicking the Source button in the upper left, then selecting the desired data source. When you make a selection, the Smartboard refreshes with data from the new source.

Timeline

The RUM Smartboard begins with an interactive timeline at the top of the page. This timeline plots a line graph representing Doc Complete by default, and you can choose to view a different metric using the metric dropdown.

Time Window Selection

All graphs and tables displayed in the My App Smartboard are generated using RUM data from within your selected time window (last six hours by default.) You can select a different time window by clicking the field at the top left and selecting the desired timeframe, or by moving/resizing the shaded region in the timeline. When you make a new selection, all of the other sections of the Smartboard refresh with data from the new time window.

Prior Time Comparison

The timeline plots two different lines - one representing test data from the selected time window (blue line), and, for comparison, another representing test data from a prior time period (dotted red line).

By default, the comparison time is one week prior to the selected time window (e.g. if you have selected June 30 from noon to 1pm, the comparison time frame would be June 23 from noon to 1pm.) You can change the comparison time in the Compare dropdown menu above the timeline. After making a selection, click Go to refresh the timeline.

Summary Tab

Key Metrics

This is a row of tiles displaying important metrics averaged across the selected time window. Each tile also displays the percentage change in that metric as compared to the selected "prior" time.

Trending Performance

Summarizes test data in two line graphs representing the primary and secondary metrics selected above. These line graphs also show prior performance based on the Compare time selected at the top. Any Key Events (see following section) are displayed above the line graphs.

Key Events

Smartboard automatically detects potentially significant changes in test performance and calls your attention to them in the Key Events section. For example, if there was a large change in Page Views during your selected timeframe, this section might say "Page Views increased, Feb 28 at 07:00 - Mar 03 at 17:00."

The Key Events section also lists any Alerts generated by your Web App during the selected timeframe.

Error Summary

This section lets you view Error Messages, Network Errors, and HTTP Status codes generated during the selected timeframe. You can click View More to see an expanded view and access corresponding Explorer charts and Records.
image.png

Device Summary

This section lets you view breakdowns of browser types, device types, operating systems, and screen resolutions that accessed your Web App during the selected timeframe. You can click View More to see an expanded view and access corresponding Explorer charts and Records.

image.png

Pages Summary

This section breaks down which pages were viewed during the selected timeframe, either by Page Group, Page, Page Variation, or Page Domain.

Location Tab

The location tab displays a world map, color coded to indicate from which countries users accessed your Web App. Green indicates acceptable performance for the selected metric, yellow indicates Warning, and red indicates Critical.

Below the map, you can see a breakdown of performance by city, country, continent, or region.

Network Tab

The network tab lets you break down performance by ISP or ASN, and also displays relative performance by connection bandwidth.

Scenarios Tab

The Scenarios tab helps you estimate the impact that changes to your site's performance metrics might have by applying hypothetical changes to your historical data. For example, you might ask, "if I reduce page load time by 1 second, what will the impact be on Page Views?" To answer this, you can adjust the Doc Complete metric down by 1 second, and our algorithm will estimate the number of Page Views that would correlate to this performance increase. Alternatively, you could set a Page Views "goal" by adjusting that metric to the desired value, and then it will estimate the Doc Complete value your site would need to maintain in order to achieve this.

Recent Errors Tab

This tab your app's recent errors, and lets you break them down by browser, device, Page Group, or specific page. You can select a specific error in the graphs to see more detail and access corresponding Records.
