Advanced Settings

The table below describes each of the Advanced Settings for tests.

Note that not all of these settings are applicable to all test types, so the specific options you see will depend on which type of test you are configuring (see the Applies to column.) All options will be displayed if you are configuring Advanced Settings at the Product or Folder level, so that tests of any type may inherit their respective supported settings.

Setting Description Applies to
30x Redirects Do Not Follow
  • By enabling this, it will disable the redirect in the Primary URL.
  • While Monitoring only with respect to Primary URL, this option is useful to avoid redirects.

40x or 50x Mark as Successful
  • By default, the agent treats any 40X or 50X HTTP Response codes as test failures.
  • In the case such codes are not considered failures for your site or application you can enable this setting to not treat the response code as a failure.
  • The transaction will continue to the next command and try to execute it if possible.

Cache TLD Nameserver Queries
  • Directs DNS to Cache requests made to Top-Level Domain (TLD) servers for the discovery of Authoritative Name Servers.
  • The monitor will store the list of NS records provided by the TLDs, but it will not show any impact from the TLDs.
  • DNS
Certificate Revocation Disabled Disables checking certificate revocation. Useful if using a self-signed certificate or a custom certificate without CRL Distribution Points extension.
  • SSL

  • Web (Chrome)
  • Transaction (Chrome)
Debug Primary Host on Failure
  • Runs Ping, Traceroute, and DNS traversal to the primary host on test failure.
  • By default, it runs DNS Traversal in case of DNS failure or in the case a DNS Alert Threshold is breached.
  • It will run Ping and Traceroutes in case of Connect, Wait, Load, or Response failure or in the case the respective alert thresholds are breached.
  • The Ping and Traceroute will also run in the case a Webpage Response or Webpage Response with Suspect Alert Threshold is breached - and the main URL response was 20% or higher than Webpage Response.

DNS Recursive Resolution Disabled
  • With a recursive name query, the DNS client requires that the DNS server responds to the client with either the requested resource record or an error message stating that the record or domain name does not exist.
  • If enabled, the DNS server cannot refer the DNS client to a different DNS server. Useful for monitoring performance of specific servers.
  • DNS
DNSSEC Enables collection of DNSSEC Data
  • DNS (Direct)
EDNS Subnet
  • Allows you to specify an IP subnet to include in the query to the server.
  • The server uses this information to resolve to an IP address that is near the IP subnet.
  • DNS
Enable TCP for DNS Test Type protocol DNS tests use UDP by default. This setting allows you to use TCP instead.
  • Traceroute
Enforce Failure if test runs longer than
  • Causes test to result in failure if it runs longer than the specified time.
  • Catchpoint web tests have a default timeout threshold of 30 seconds. For Transaction tests, the default threshold is 30 seconds per step.

HTTP Headers Capture
  • If enabled, collects HTTP request/response header information.
  • You can specify if the capture should happen:
    1. On Test Failure - when the test fails.
    2. On Any Failure - if the test or any request fails or there are JavaScript errors.
    3. Always - every time the test runs.

  • It does not cost additional points.

Response Content or Metadata Capture
  • Collects HTTP Response content information.
  • You can specify if the capture should happen:
    1. On Test Failure - when the test fails.
    2. On Any Failure - if the test or any request fails or there are JavaScript errors.
    3. Always - every time the test runs.

  • Captures a screenshot of the page.
  • You can specify if the capture should happen:

    2. On Any Failure - if the test or any request fails.
    3. Always - every time the test runs and HTML renders.
  • In the case the HTML is not loaded in the browser (for example connect failure) the screenshot will not be captured as no HTML is rendered. The screenshot is available in the waterfall charts.

  • Web (Mobile and Chrome)
  • HTML Code (Mobile and Chrome)

Try Next Nameserver on Failure
  • If enabled, when a DNS query fails the test retries the query on the next server.
  • By default, the Catchpoint DNS agent fails the test if a NS server query fails. The reason for this behavior is to catch and notify you of any problems in your DNS infrastructure.
  • However, this is not the default behavior for recursive DNS resolvers used by end-users. By default, when a DNS query fails they retry the query on the next NS server.
  • This setting tells the agent to behave the same way, and query the next server.
  • Please note that this feature will delay the detection of a problem on a NS server.
Note: When this setting is enabled in the DNS Experience test, the Catchpoint Agent retries Maximum 3 times 3 different NS for 1.5seconds each on the same level.
Exception: We do not move to the next nameserver when you get a hard failure such as ServerFail- Server failure in your DNS experience test. We move to the next nameserver only when Nameservers timeouts.
  • DNS
Verify ECN Bits Along the Path Allows setting an ECN (Explicit Congestion Notification) codepoint.
  • Traceroute
Verify Test on Failure
  • Runs the test again from the same node in the event of failure.
  • However, will not run the test again when the test receives an HTTP 4xx or 5xx status code.
  • Also, will not run the test again when Test Failure : [50061] - HTTP response header (root-request) did not satisfy the alert settings.
  • If a second test to verify a failure does run, then additional points will be consumed, which match the type of test and any other advanced settings that are enabled.
  • The first failed test run will appear on the waterfall with an "This was the first test for the interval, which failed and was repeated.” However, it will not be included in performance charts, reports, or alerts.
  • The second test run, that ran to verify the failure, will always be included in performance charts, reports, and alerts.
