Understanding Last Mile Node Testing

Prev Next

Last Mile nodes are mini PCs with the Catchpoint agent installed, and are deployed in the homes of real end-users. They utilize local ISPs such as Verizon FIOS, ATT Uverse, and Comcast. A major difference between Last-Mile nodes and backbone nodes is that Last Mile nodes/agents rely on consumer ISPs to resolve the DNS, unlike the backbone nodes which use local DNS resolvers. Since Last Mile nodes rely on consumer networks that are impacted by locality and consumer usage, the performance of a test can:

  • be slower than backbone tests
  • have performance variation throughout the day not tied to your infrastructure
  • be more prone to failures due to local network issues.

Be aware that the performance issues observed could be very local to that user, building, or city block, and not necessarily related to your infrastructure.

IP Addresses of Last Mile nodes are not static and can change without notice. We do not post or list the IP addresses to protect the privacy of users hosting our agents.

Please also understand that our support team cannot troubleshoot any network issues that occur on last mile nodes, as they are unmanaged services.

If you are interested in deploying a Last Mile agent, please contact Catchpoint support with information about where you are located and the ISP you currently rely on.
