2023-12 Penguin Release Notes

Prev Next

P1

The final release in our fast birds theme this year is named after the Gentoo Penguin, the fastest swimming bird in the world. These penguins can reach speeds of up to 36 km/h (22 mph). They mainly live on islands around Antarctica, and are easily recognized by the wide white strip across their head and bright orange-red bill.

Internet Sonar - Status Page Data

Internet Sonar correlates vast amounts of data from billions of synthetic tests to provide the earliest detection of outages in hundreds of services across the world. Starting this release, we've also included incident details with root-cause information from the providers' status pages.

Internet Stack Map - Preview*

Customer-facing digital services are composed of a complex mesh of internal and external systems, and most websites and SaaS applications rely on numerous third-party services and applications (CDN, DNS, Payment, etc.). Many of the services your applications depend on are outside of your control and visibility.

In the previous release we announced the Preview of Internet Stack Map, enabling you to create and customize topological maps of your applications with both internal and external dependencies. We have continued to add even more features and functionality to Stack Map, including additional data filtering options and better integration with Internet Sonar, just to name a few.

Please fill out this form or reach out to your customer service representative if you would like to participate in the Internet Stack Map preview.

*The Internet Stack Map preview is available to customers that have Internet Sonar enabled.

Puppeteer Transaction Test - Limited Preview*

Puppeteer is a testing automation framework based on the DevTools protocol, which is the protocol used by the Chrome Developer Tools. With Catchpoint’s new Puppeteer test type, you can build browser transaction tests using standard Puppeteer scripts, and analyze the results in Records, Explorer, and Smartboard, just like our existing Selenium or Playwright Transaction Tests.

To sign up for Puppeteer preview, please complete this form.

*This feature is dependent on the Agent update, which will be rolled out in January 2024.

RUM - Limit Ajax Collection to Specific Domains

To get a comprehensive understanding of how data is exchanged between the client and server for Ajax-based web pages, it is essential to be able to analyze Ajax calls specifically. Now, when configuring a RUM App, you can apply filters to control which Ajax calls are captured based on the target domain. This enhances efficiency, simplifies analysis, and facilitates the isolation of issues, providing a more focused and effective observability strategy.

Records Compare - Waterfall Comparison Login

Records Compare makes your job easier by enabling you to compare up to four different records (“waterfalls”) on the same screen. In response to customer feedback, we have improved the Records Compare feature by adding three additional comparison options for the Waterfall data. You can now compare multiple runs by Full URL, Path, and Authority + Path.

Filmstrip Interval in Records

We have improved our filmstrip capture feature to accommodate some changes in Chrome’s API. Rather than pre-setting the capture interval when creating your tests, you can now adjust the interval view directly within Records. You will be able to select intervals between 500ms and 2,000ms. You can also choose to only see frames that reflect a change from the prior captured frame.

Configure Attempts and Timeout for DNS Direct Test*

Catchpoint’s DNS Direct test allows you to specify a particular name server to monitor for availability and performance. Prior to this release, the test would make three query attempts, each timing out after 1.5 seconds, before marking a test run a failure. Now, there is a new option in Advanced Settings to control the number of query attempts and the timeout length, enabling you to make adjustments based on expected nameserver performance.

*This feature is dependent on the Agent update, which will be rolled out in January 2024.

Traceroute ECN in Node-to-Node Tests

As the internet is starting to rely on L4S, we have enhanced our network monitoring tools to capture ECN data to help with troubleshooting deployment of L4S-based technologies.

Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN) technology is specifically engineered for applications that are extremely sensitive to latency, such as cloud-based gaming and cloud-rendered VR/AR. Our latest release extends ECN support to our Node-to-Node traceroute test. With this functionality, you will be able to closely track the level of congestion across your network. This will assist in addressing important questions about whether packet loss is due to specific components in the network that lack ECN capability.
P7

Traceroute ECN Analysis in Explorer

To simplify the process of identifying ECN-related issues, we have expanded ECN support to Explorer. Now, ECN can be utilized as a dimension to dissect various metrics and gain insights into network performance. The ECN Status dimension can be applied to any of the available metrics in Explorer.

Traceroute - Updates to Additional Monitor*

In recent releases, we’ve added new traceroute metrics, such as Path MTU, TCP MSS, MPLS, Jitter, and more. Now, all of these recently-introduced features are available when Traceroute is selected as an Additional Monitor with another test type. The UI has been updated to incorporate these changes and provide a seamless experience.

*This feature is dependent on the Agent update, which is rolled out to our public nodes in stages after the release.

Test Suites

It is often beneficial to monitor an application using multiple tests of different types to get a complete picture of its performance. Test Suites allow you to create a set of preconfigured tests for a specific application all at once, rather than manually creating each test individually.

In this release, we have enhanced Test Suites by adding the ability to convert a Test Suite to a standard folder and tests, enabling you to access all the rich editing capabilities available in our standard Synthetic testing today. We have also enabled the Change Log for Test Suites.

If there are services you’d like Test Suites to support, you can let us know by creating a feature request in the Share Your Feedback section of the Resource Center (in the "?" menu).

Deprecating Google Pagespeed Score

In this release, we are removing support for the original Google Pagespeed Score, which has been deprecated by Google and replaced by Lighthouse Score. Lighthouse scores are available from the Webpagetest test type in Catchpoint, providing better insight into your performance data.

Additional Features

  • Test Time Threshold Defaults in Test Properties: Warning and Critical thresholds for Test Time, whether default or configured, will be displayed for all existing and new tests going forward.

  • Additional time intervals in Explorer: When viewing the timeframes “Last 30 Days,” “Last Month,” and “Last 90 Days,” you will now be able to choose the “Week” time interval to view week-over-week performance trends.

  • New mobile devices available for mobile testing: All current mobile devices from Apple, Samsung, and Google can now be emulated for mobile testing.

  • Percentile calculation for Cumulative Layout Shift: You can now select different percentile calculations to see the value at a particular rank, or the lowest metric value that is above a given percentage of values in the set.
